Strength and Balance Program Instructor Training

The Stay On Your Feet® Program, coordinated by Injury Matters, delivers a range of strength and balance exercise program instructor training workshops. These workshops provide health and community exercise professionals with the knowledge, skills and confidence to deliver safe and effective evidence-based falls prevention exercise programs to older adults in the community.

Stay On Your Feet® can also deliver the following instructor training workshops upon request and with sufficient attendees:

About the programs…

Active Balance Workshops

Are you a fitness instructor working with older adults?  Are you a therapy assistant or activity coordinator working with older adults in the community? Do you support Allied Health professionals in their role? Would you like to learn more about the importance of balance and what you can do? This workshop will provide you with insight into the incidence and impact of falls, how ageing affects balance, as well as explore evidence-based exercise strategies that you can incorporate into your existing programs to support older adults to improve their balance and prevent falls. This workshop can be adapted to suit the experience base of the group and tailored to suit organisational needs.


Lifestyle-integrated Functional Exercise (LiFE) Program

The LiFE program provides an alternative approach to falls prevention exercise by embedding balance and strength activities within everyday tasks. The program has been proven effective in reducing the risk of falls and in improving capacity for functional everyday activity. The LiFE program is best targeted to older adults who are at risk of falling or have previously fallen and do not have a significant cognitive impairment that would impact on their ability to exercise safely whilst unsupervised.


Otago Exercise Programme

The Otago Exercise Programme is an individually tailored, home based balance and strength falls prevention program delivered at home by a trained instructor. The results from trials report overall the exercise programme reduced by 35% both the number of falls and the number of injuries resulting from falls. Around 70% of the exercise participants were still exercising after one year and 43% exercised each week as prescribed. The Otago Exercise Programme is recommended for those aged 80 and older living in the community who have fallen in the past year.


Stepping On

 The Stepping On program is an evidence-based program that is effective and proven to reduce falls in older people living in the community. The evidence has proven that Stepping On reduces falls by 31% in the community. The program incorporates strategies to implement positive lifestyle changes to keep people independent, upright and active.

The Introductory train the trainer course equips students to facilitate community based Stepping On programs for older people. This program is delivered in a combination of pre-learning and workshop training. It combines self-paced learning and practical workshops involving small groups and network building. This program is facilitated by Megan Swann, the co-author and researcher of the Stepping On program, and co-facilitated by a second experienced allied health trainer. This training is suited to participants with an understanding of aged interested in facilitating a Stepping On program, such as allied health, nursing and community workers (preferable that they have an aged care certificate)


Tai Chi for Arthritis for Falls Prevention Instructor Training

Tai Chi for Arthritis is a program specially designed by Dr. Paul Lam in conjunction with a team of medical specialists and tai chi experts. Based on the Sun style of Tai Chi, Tai Chi for Arthritis is easy to learn, effective and safe. Tai Chi for Arthritis works to prevent falls through improving balance, confidence and muscular strength in older adults. Tai Chi for Arthritis for Falls Prevention is the same as Dr Paul Lam’s Tai Chi for

Arthritis program except it has additional emphasis on fall prevention. This program is evidenced based as effective at preventing falls. On successful completion of this training you will be eligible to become certified as a Tai Chi for Arthritis Instructor .
