Introduction to the Lifestyle-Integrated Exercise (LiFE) Program and Otago Exercise Programme (Albany)

Are you a Physiotherapist, Allied Health Assistant, Occupational Therapist or Exercise Physiologist working with older adults?

Are you wanting to deliver an exercise proven to prevent falls?

Attend this one-day intensive workshop, delivered by Senior Physiotherapist and Falls Specialist Tony Petta to learn about the LiFE and Otago programs and to acquire the skills and confidence to implement these programs with at risk clients in your clinical practice.

Time: 8:00am to 4:00pm (morning/afternoon tea, lunch and refreshments included)

This workshop provides the opportunity to:

  • Learn the strength and balance principles of the LiFE and Otago programs.
  • Acquire the skills and confidence to deliver the LiFE and Otago programs; including assessing participants, tailoring the program and ensuring exercises are performed safely.
  • Increase your ability to be able to provide effective feedback and motivate LiFE and Otago program participants.
  • Share you experience and knowledge with other clinicians in implementing exercise and activity programs in working with older adults at risk of falling.

About the Lifestyle-integrated Functional Exercise (LiFE) Program:        

The LiFE program is a novel approach to exercise which aims to embed balance and strength activities within the everyday tasks of the older person. The program is best targeted towards older adults who are at risk of falling or have previously fallen and who do not have a significant cognitive impairment that would impact on their ability to exercise safely whilst unsupervised.

About the Otago Exercise Programme:

The Otago Exercise Programme is an individually tailored, home based balance and strength falls prevention program delivered to older adults by a trained instructor. The program has shown to be effective in reducing the number of falls and number of injuries resulting from falls. The Otago program is most effective and best targeted towards older adults at highest risk, including those over 80 years of age and those who have previously fallen.1

About your instructor:

Tony Petta is a Senior Physiotherapist working in falls prevention at the Department of Rehabilitation and Aged Care Unit, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. His clinical interest predominantly focuses on working with people over 65 years within the community and residential aged care setting. Tony has over 25 years of experience in the tertiary health care system.
